Three minorities:

• les Viet
• les Kmer
• les Lao

Exploitation des ressources naturelles:

• les minéraux
• le riz (un peu)
• rubber (l'arbre hévéa)
• l'opium --> legal! huge market!

*"protectorate" --> semblance of freedom (moderate respect for culture and religion); traditional monarchs retained symbolic influence (but no power!)
*Vietnam became a well-organized "colonie d'exploitation"
*"colony" --> no reverence for tradition
